Feudal Warlord General Brigan of the Aesirs is a supporting antagonist character in the main storyline of Erion Saga book series, he was the feudal commander of the Ragnanival Kingdom and second highest in command of the Ragnanival Army, he was considered a top warlord of their nation, he is known for his immense brutality in the battlefield and abusive treatment of his own soldiers, especially with the female soldiers he has in his battalion group.
Profile Overview[]
General Brigan is an Aesir human feudal commander of the Ragnanival Army, he is arrogant, brutish, hot-headed and heartless leader but behind this is a sly cunning that hides his true intentions.
He is the second most powerful figure in the ragnanival kingdom by all of aspects in the aesir society by terms of social status, military rank and physical strength, his power of authority is just behind that of demon lord odin, brigan is the most ruthless feudal commanders in erion by considering his treatment of their soldiers in the ragnanival military, that he mostly abuses or sometimes kill them if he did not liked their response to his commands or disobeying his orders to them, he is also the most abusive figure in power of authority and commanding military leader.
Brigan is an abusive battle commander in the ragnanival kingdom, he often mistreat most of his soldiers and sometimes kill some of them if he did not like their opinions towards him, their suggested ideas to him or disobeying his orders, this type of instinct that brigan has, made some of the soldiers in their military to hate him due to his bad treatment to them, some soldiers refuse to be part of a battalion group where brigan is assigned to lead it to make fight against the ringford army.
Appearance Traits[]
Brigan, like Demon Lord Odin is a giant, with powerful muscles. He wears a number of circular-shaped armor plates that well protect him from harm, though they can be knocked off with sufficient damage. Always in one hand he carries a horn that he uses as a flagon for his special drink. He keeps a number of animal furs from most likely dangerous beasts draped on his shoulders. To top it off, he has a scruffy-looking red mustache which covers the majority of his face. His hammer together with his ginger hair resembles the Norse description of Thor.
Personality Classification[]
Brigan is at best unreliable and insulting, and at worst traitorous and downright abusive. Twice he holds back his forces during major battles of the Cauldron War to make a dramatic entry. The first time this resulted in the death of Princess Griselda and the second time this resulted in his humiliating defeat at the hands of Velvet, earning her his hatred. He later attempted to sacrifice the princess to the dragon Wagner. Brigan is brutish yet cunning always scheming a way to overthrow King Odin and take control of Ragnanival and use its armies to just trample everything else under his heel. This comes out strongest when after Velvet is captured he attempts to subtly blackmail Odin publicly as he had learned beforehand that Velvet was his daughter from the former Kingdom of Valentine. However he is a bitter man as he still bore a grudge from Velvet humiliating him though planned to reveal the fact that she was Odin's daughter after killing her on Horn Mountain.
Brigan is particularly abusive to the Valkyrie warriors under his command, frequently using them as mere servants, or likely worse. When Gwendolyn attempted to save Velvet from Brigan's planned murder, he offered her the chance to live provided she become his mistress. Later he planned to make her soul his "plaything". Also during Velvet's story he attempts to rape her when he first sees her. Gwendolyn tells Inferno King Onyx that he himself is no different than the men at Ragnavinal. She could be referring to General Brigan due to his mistreatment of females though in general women that leave the battlefield are not treated with respect as they would otherwise in Ragnanival.
He also dislikes Pookas for reasons unrevealed, and attempts to skin Cornelius when the cursed prince asks to borrow the general's horn flagon to complete a challenge set to him by Odin to prove his honor.
Background Story[]
Nothing is known about Brigan's life before the main events of story of the game started, but it is speculated that he had been serving and fighting for the Ragnanival Kingdom from the beginning of his life. Brigan is already serving and fighting for the nation of Aesir and being a top warlord of their army when the main story started at the very beginning.
Plotline Summary Perspective[]
Honeyed Words[]
Oswald infiltrates Ragnanival and comes across Brigan speaking with Skuldi Brigan angry that Odin had denied his strategy in favor for a sneak attack and calling him a coward. Skuldi speaks of how it is a timid move to make against the fairies. Brigan agrees believing all they need to do is just squash them like bugs he then shouts that the soldiers are all cowards. Skuldi then uses the moment to plant the idea that Brigan should be the new ruler of Ragnanival, Brigan is flattered and asks if Skuldi truly believes that. Skuldi 'agrees' calling Odin a weak old man and how only Brigan can rule the Nation. But it's then that Skuldi senses Oswald's presence and asks to reveal himself. Oswald does and Brigan asks who he is and if he'd like to share a drink if not then to leave. Oswald turns to do so but Brigan realizes that Oswald might have listened in on their conversation demands Oswald's identity threatening to crush Oswald till his name falls out. The two battle and Oswald is victorious, he then forces Brigan to reveal Odin's plan for the next battle.
A Fool's Plan[]
Brigan would recover from his battle with Oswald enough to participate in Odin's sneak attack not telling Odin that the plan had been wrested via Oswald. Brigan would deliberately hold back his forces during the attack in order to make a dramatic entrance. However this resulted in Griselda's death he would vehemently deny his actions causing this blaming Griselda by saying she rushed in on her own. In the following battle he would once again hold back his forces but some would state the fact that the previous attempt to do this resulted in Griselda's death annoyed he lets some of his forces go forward keeping the rest behind. When a soldier tries to argue with him Brigan kills him out of annoyance, it is then he spots Velvet, the Forest Witch. He stops her and attempts to swoon her but when she attacks him he moves out of anger to attack her. He loses the battle while Odin, and Gwendolyn took the Cauldron but Velvet would stop the Cauldron rendering their victory null and void.
Angry at this he would rally people of the fact that if the Cauldron wasn't working then the people who died fighting to get it would have been a waste. He announces he'll find the witch and force her to talk, Odin would tell some Valkyrie to stop him, while Gwendolyn would volunteer to find the witch herself. Odin would grudgingly send her but she would end up battling the witch. Odin having a premonition of this would stop the fight before it became fatal but in his haste he doesn't realize he had been followed by Brigan who would overhear the truth to Velvet's identity. For Brigan this is a prime opportunity to take control of Ragnanival though he would 'swear' to take the secret to his grave he had other plans.
Betrayal and Death[]
Brigan, inspired by a suggestion of Skuldi of the Three Wise Men, also planned to usurp Odin and take over Ragnanival by using Velvet as a pawn to fatally damage Odin's reputation with his people. When Velvet had been captured she was interrogated by Brigan and various soldiers. She would eventually reveal that the ring to control the Cauldron was in the stomach of Wagner the Ruler of the Skies and Sovereign of Horn Mountain. Odin realizes this means that he cannot get it himself as Wagner is immune to his powers due to giving Odin his own blood. However Brigan uses this as a means to both blackmail Odin and get revenge on Velvet, he offers to sacrifice her to the Dragon to get the ring. When Odin hesitates Brigan subtly suggests that Odin might be protecting her for 'personal' reasons. Odin is powerless to stop Brigan and Brigan uses this as a sign to have her executed.
At the top of Horn Mountain Brigan tells his men to find the Dragon as Wagner is absent. However when they leave he reveals that he didn't want to meet Wagner and instead he would kill Velvet himself. However he is stopped by Gwendolyn who frees Velvet out of love for her father. Angered by this Brigan prepares to battle Gwendolyn, but she would ask him why he is so earnest to kill Velvet. He reveals that he intended to use Velvet's death as blackmail to sow doubt into the people of Ragnanival about Odin having both sired a child with the enemy and then killing her to keep it a secret.
He would then use Velvet's death to show Odin as a heartless monster who would kill his own children to keep his status especially if that child was from a nation they were fighting at the time. He offers Gwendolyn to be his mistress but she kills him for his attempted betrayal, and was banished herself for it. He later got his chance of ruling Ragnavinal when Queen Odette gave him the job of punishing Odin by means of possessing his body. According to Brigan, Odette holds him with some respect, unlike Odin who regards to his general as a fool at least twice. He attempted to use Odin as a vessel with which to obtain revenge on Gwendolyn, but lost to her again. The fate of already dead souls in Erion that are killed again is never revealed, but likely it isn't pleasant. In any case, Brigan is not seen again.
Relationships[]
Demon Lord Odin[]
Odin and Brigan have a rather hostile relationship. Odin will often call Brigan a fool out of earshot and seems to express a dislike of his actions. Similarly Brigan calls Odin weak and cowardly when out of earshot and also expresses dislike of Odin's actions when he hears the plan of Odin's sneak attack. In public they are, for the most part, civil and respectful of each other, however Brigan has will speak his mind when he has the chance to do so. Though Brigan claims to be 'loyal' he's ever seeking a way to depose Odin and take over as ruler. This is strongest when learning of the truth of Odin's connection with Velvet he blackmails Odin in public to kill her and use her death as a way to sow doubt into Odin as a leader.
Princess Griselda of the Aesirs[]
Not much is known of the relationship of these two however his actions of holding back did cost Griselda her life as he wanted a 'heroic' approach to the battle.
Princess Gwendolyn of the Aesirs[]
His relationship with Gwendolyn is not extensive she is aware of his status as a general and is respectful as a result. However when she rescues Velvet she does notice an unusual fervor that Brigan displayed in killing her. Brigan reveals his plan and even invites her to be his mistress however she would slay him for his treachery.
Skuldi the Red Sorcerer[]
Brigan and Skuldi while not outright allies are at the least acquaintances, Skuldi encourages Brigan's desire to be ruler agreeing with him and calling Odin a 'Feeble old man' and Brigan is eager to eat up the praise. That being said that is the extent of Skuldi's actions with Brigan as once Oswald was discovered Skuldi fled rapidly.
Princess Velvet of the Valentine[]
Their first interaction happened when she was leaving the cauldron's site as she does not want to be seen by the fairies or the ragnanival soldiers being in the cauldron that might capture her and interrogate Velvet what she knew about the cauldron or they may forcibly ask her to give the ring that controls it since in the fairies side are aware that she took the ring from their kingdom earlier in the main storyline but during her leave from the cauldron's site Brigan spotted her and tried to stop her by harrassing Velvet as she attempts to leave the cauldron's site which led to their fight that resulted in stalemate and stunning Brigan temporarily buying her some time to escape, upon her capture later by the Ragnanival forces in the Winterhorn Ridge Mountain where she had come to give the ring to dragon Wagner for safekeeping it from anyone who attempts to find it that might use it for their evil plans, the Ragnanival forces bring her to Brigan and for some reason it gives him an idea of sacrificing her to dragon Wagner in order for him to obtain the ring of cauldron and he will give to the king ragnanival in order for their kingdom to control the cauldron for their world domination plans, there was once an instance that he attempted to rape her during this scene when gwendolyn was informed of this she immediately came for her paternal half sister Velvet's rescue, Brigan attempted sacrifice and rape of Velvet prompted Gwendolyn to kill him in vain to stop his plans for her then she freed velvet from their forces captivity and informed the rest of the Ragnanival personnels that she was a "traitor" princess to their kingdom for rescuing her own paternal half sister but gwendolyn did not actually told the rest of ragnanival personnels that Velvet was actually her half-sister.
Abilities[]
Brigan has almost absurd strength, as his bulging muscles would hint at. In addition, he is quite skilled at handling small (for him anyway) war hammers either at melee range or as a throwing weapon. His real danger though lies with his drink he is so fond of. It seems to augment his abilities, allowing him to breath fire or demonstrating even more dangerous physical feats. It's also likely extremely strong, too much so for most people, as his most dangerous ability involves him literally force-feeding it to his victims, usually resulting in extreme disorientation and damage for periods of time. The four shields on his chest are also powerful magic armaments that make him nearly invincible to damage - physical and magical. Interestingly much like Odin Brigan is extremely resilient as he has fought 4 Pyspher wielders only dying when he fought Gwendolyn as he survived fighting, Oswald, Velvet and Cornelius before Gwendolyn. In the original Odin Sphere a small amount of damage will be inflicted on Brigan while they are still on his body. However in Liefthrasir they will nullify damage completely till all four have been removed.
Trivia[]
- General Brigan has fought four out of the five main playable characters in the main storyline and they we're Velvet, Cornelius, Gwendolyn and Oswald, mercedes is the only main playable character that has never fought brigan and she has also have never seen him throughout the story.
