Inferno King Onyx is one of the four primary antagonist characters in the main storyline of Erion Saga book series, and he is often referred to his full title name, who is the ruler of the Fire Kingdom of Volkenon Lava Pits, he is one of the Erion's powerful figures and rulers, he is also one of the five disasters predicted in the Armageddon event, he is the least evil of all four primary antagonist characters of the game, unlike other primary antagonist characters, King Onyx does not seek world destruction, at least not on the surface.

Profile Overview[]

Inferno King Onyx is a male humanoid vulcan that resides in the Volkenon lava pits, a fire Kingdom situated in the southeastern realm of erion, he is the most powerful figure in this Kingdom as he was it's mighty ruler and it's King, by ranKing of the most of rulers in the continent at that time during the main storyline, currently he was the second strongest and most powerful ruler in the erion behind demon lord odin, who ranked first, he was in the third position before the destruction of the Kingdom of Valentine and when King Valentine was still alive ruling his Kingdom which was before the main storyline events.

Technically speaking, compared to other primary antagonist characters, King Onyx is not genuinely evil. He is the only primary antagonist character in the main storyline that doesn't seek or have ambitions of conquering or destroying the world in his own will of like or interests. His Kingdom and his people we're in neutral state during the main storyline and never waged war to any other nations in erion, his Kingdom is the most peaceful nation during at the time of the main storyline events as Volkenon lava pits Kingdom never involved in any occurring wars during those times.

King Onyx is a powerful entity, being both skilled in combat and in the capacity of a leader. He is also Immortal which has made him arrogant and cocky as no one can kill him. his physical strength is quite high placing him in the top of the strongest beings of Erion. Considering he's one of the Disasters he ranks among the top 5 most powerful beings in all of Erion.

Like much cornelius, King Onyx is a loner royalty figure of his generation and his Kingdom, his monarchy has no any other royal members other than him, his aloneness status in their Kingdom made him somehow depressed at all times and always wanted to seek a companionship that will be joining him to cure out his depression and loneliness of being alone, this can be seen when he was trying to earn Gwendolyn's love and competing against Oswald over Gwendolyn who will gain the right of having her, Oswald becomes the figure that he hatred the most for being his rivalry for someone that he desired for his compansionship acquaintance.

His loneliness and Depression have made him turned into a womanizer where he would sometimes engage in multiple relationships within his people who are females which is mostly attributed to his swordswomen guardians where he is likely to engage with them a relationship to cope his depression and lonliness, his people even noted that Onyx will sometimes going to engage with them in sex just to satisfy his sex cravings, Onyx wanting to stop this habit of his that he put into his own swordswomen guardians by attempting to earn Gwendolyn's love to have somebody where he can put his sex cravings that he considered "rightfully" as Onyx thinks to himself rather than into his own female enforcers.

Appearance Traits[]

Hqdefault

Inferno King Onyx's fire beast formation which was his self true form.

King Onyx is usually in his human appearance when being in a neutral state and only shows his true form once he is about to enter a battle state or to attack someone, as a human he is shirtless and has a muscular and buffed body, he wore gauntlet that he may uses as his way of transformation into his self true form, he also wears a maroon metal armor trousers and a cape tied to his waist, by personality type, he is somehow an arrogant and always thought that he was better than anyone else and even that he was too powerful for anyone to be overcome, his own thought of state was broken after his downfall in the burned forest ruins of Ringford Kingdom after his battle with Mercedes.

Onyx wears a yellow headband crown and have white hairs, he is a muscular man and a shirtless King, he wears a pair of dark brown metal gauntlets, dark brown metal armor trousers, dark brown metal boots and a red cloak hanging on his waist along with his metal trousers, Onyx, in his human form, is a handsome muscular man, with bronzed skin, pointed ears, and up-swept opalescent white hair, wearing dark red armor leggings and a matching scarlet skirt-cape, as well as gauntlets. He is otherwise bare-chested and wears a golden crown crested with a large black Onyx, in addition to a collar that matches his armor. This guise is, in fact, a ruse: like the rest of his people, his true figure is that of a fiery monster, in his case a hulKing, demonic creature formed from magma. He allows Gwendolyn to leave the lava pits unharmed during her own story, as he believed she would be frightened by his true form and did in fact want to marry her.

Personality Classification[]

Initially Onyx seems little worse than just arrogant and used to getting what he wants, and mostly behaves himself during Gwendolyn's story. Beyond that, more and more of his negative traits begin to show, revealing him to be destructive, cruel and greedy. His love for Gwendolyn can been seen as both twisted and misunderstood. While forcefully demanding of her love, and him once saying that he would rather keep her forever asleep so she may be with him (a fate which would be cruel to Gwendolyn, and incredibly unfair), there are hints that there is something more to his feelings.

His obsession with her purity could be a reflection of how he views himself. Gwendolyn has undoubtedly killed many but her unique demeanor shows to others that she is much more than a mere murderer, while if he, a monstrous being of flame and magma, were to have even minor negative traits, he would always appear as an evil creature of death and destruction, nothing more. He envies Gwendolyn for the fact that she remains for the most part unscathed as a Valkyrie. Onyx perhaps needs to come to terms with himself and his identity.

Oswald, who bears a similar disposition to the Inferno King, infuriates Onyx to no end and he is jealous that despite their similarities and the fact that Oswald may perhaps be considered even more monstrous than the latter, that the Shadow Knight wins Gwendolyn regardless, and Onyx's own fervent need to have her is the conflict of him believing she could never love him, and his own inability to voice how much he really cares. While he is fully capable of being cruel, even merciless, it seems that his actions are driven from a conflicted character. That being said he has no qualms of the destruction of the world should it happen though he does not do anything to aid it.

Background Story[]

there are no much known things in Onyx's past life, although it is a known fact he is already being the King of the fire Kingdom before the main storyline events started, but it is not known how long he had been reigning it, he was the longest living being during at the time of the main storyline and the only one being over 100 years of living, since the fact that Onyx was not really a human being but rather a ravage fire beast, a creature species that possess a long life span by it's living length standards and he uses a human disguise form when he is in normal state.

The only known part of his lifetime before the main storyline events started is that King Onyx was a loner figure in his Kingdom due to the fact that he has no any other members in his monarchy other than himself, it is unknown if he had any relatives and it is likely that they had probably died before the main storyline started if they ever existed and lived alongside him, during this time when he was mostly lonely before his interactions with everyone in erion, during the main storyline occurrence, he mostly engages relationship with the women of his people especially to his servant female enforcers known as "Fire Vulcan Child".

Some rumors told by his people that circulated in some nearby places surrounding their Kingdom such as the Kingdom of titania where the rumors had spread that King Onyx would sometimes engage sex with them just to satisfy his sexual needs, due to the fact that he was a loner figure of their Kingdom and had no partner for himself, this loneliness caused depression for King Onyx which made him to engage relationships with his own female enforcers in this reason, even though their people know this to be true to him most of them would not be bothered because they think it's not wrong and believes that a King could do anything it wanted to it's Kingdom and it's people and since King Onyx was a King in the Volkenon lava pits, his people don't seem to mind his sexual relationships to the women of his own people.

Plot line Summary Perspective[]

Decoy Prize[]

King Onyx's Chronological appearance closer to the end of the overall story when Odin comes to his Kingdom after hearing that Gwendolyn was there. Though they greet each other respectfully there is a tension especially when Odin learns that the Three Wise Men had given Gwendolyn to Onyx. Odin is able to deduce that they intended to use Gwendolyn as a means of forcing Onyx to fight him. Onyx would state that he is surprised that Odin would come for his daughter due to his more power hungry nature. Onyx would then express thanks over Odin's spell on Gwendolyn. But Odin would only laugh at him, and tell him that he hopes that Onyx gets what he wishes. Onyx demands to know what he means by that. Shortly afterward Oswald would come looKing for Gwendolyn and would be relieved to find her still asleep.

However Onyx would confront him, mocKing him and expresses his intense disgust for him. The two would fight however Oswald would come out victorious, bitter over his defeat he moves to kiss her but is stopped by Oswald who threatens to kill him. Unable to fight back he is forced to concede. He tells Oswald the truth of the enchanted sleep that the spell could not force her to love whoever she kisses, he is surprised to find Oswald is perfectly fine with that. Oswald would offer Onyx his sword for whatever he wished just once but telling Onyx that he would never allow Gwendolyn to come near him so long as he lived.

Heart Rivalry[]

Gwendolyn would go to the Fire Kingdom due to heartache for her husband Oswald who she had grown fond of after learning he had fought a dragon for her. Onyx would welcome her enthusiastically and attempt to treat her but Gwendolyn would ask for her husband. Onyx admits that while he would like to lie he would not to her and confirm that Oswald is in the Kingdom fighting the newborn dragon Leventhan. Gwendolyn would also learn that originally she had been promised to marry Onyx but Odin had went back on his word and marry her to Oswald instead unaware of the reason for this being Odin wanted the ring Titrel. Onyx then tells her that Oswald could die or even be dead and that he would void the agreement if she marries him. Telling her that it's up to her just so long as she was his. However this reminded her of how women are treated in her homeland and she would rebuke him by telling him she was not an object, echoing her husbands words she would then fly off to find him.

She would find her husband and repel the dragon saving him from certain death. Onyx approaches telling her to leave Oswald be as his 'pride' had costed him this. He would express his keen interest in her due to her ability to defeat Leventhen however angered still by his earlier attitude she would coldly inform him that Oswald has kept his word and that they are leaving. This angers Onyx greatly causing him to reveal the truth of Oswald's connection to Queen Odette and insulting Oswald even further. Angered by this she threatens to attack Onyx should he keep insulting Oswald. Impressed by her fiery rebuke he let's the matter lie, but tells Gwendolyn that only she stokes the embers of his heart. However shortly after this the events of Armageddon would proceed following the death of Odette and King Valentine finding the Cauldron and reactivating it. Valentine would use the Cauldron to fire powerful beams destabilizing the land and causing Erion to start sinKing into the sea. The Volkenon Fire Pits would be closest to the sea and thus the first victims of the incoming floods. Onyx would realize the Prophecy is happening and would absorb all the flames of the Kingdom to strengthen himself before setting out to invade the rest of the land leaving a fiery trail of destruction in his wake.

Armageddon[]

Proving Prophecies[]

During these events as they wander out in the burning ruins of the Ringford Kingdom, the Vulcans expressing concern for the prophecy involving the World Tree but Onyx angrily shouts "There is no World Tree!" believing the prophecy to be a lie. However they eventually encounter the Current Queen Mercedes crying over a death of a young man, King Onyx taunts Mercedes for the destruction of her Kingdom. Stating this as proof that the World Tree doesn't exist and that the prophecy is wrong according to his observations, Mercedes prepares to fight Onyx to stop his rampage.

Death[]

The two fight with all of their being and in the end it comes to a mortal draw with both sides having deathly wounds, King Onyx is flabbergasted as he realizes he is dying and yet is unable to understand why. However he hears Mercedes giving her name to the Heavens and reveals that her true name is 'Yggdrasil' which means the World Tree. After her death Onyx realizes his folly that the World Tree was not a tree but a living being who bore the name. Accepting his death he crumbles into dust but not before saying that the prophecy, by his understanding, was still incomplete as no one would survive the apocalypse something that would be proven false by Oswald and Gwendolyn.

False Ends[]

If Cornelius or Velvet battle Onyx, there will first be a scene of his army destroy the Vanir, and then the battle will begin. Either of the two will only be able to wound Onyx, enraging the Vulcans, causing them to attack the character in a mass, overwhelming them and reducing them beyond even ashes. Onyx then urges his army onward, his path now set on the Crystallization Cauldron.

If Gwendolyn battles Onyx, the two get into an argument upon her arrival, Gwendolyn urging Onyx to stop and Onyx lashing out at her for choosing Oswald over him. In a rage, Onyx assumes his true form and kills the Valkyrie princess. Upon realizing what he did, Onyx held Gwendolyn's corpse close, cursing the fact that every treasure he holds invariably turns to ashes. He orders his Vulcans to leave him, and waits for death while holding Gwendolyn, promising to never let her go.

If Oswald battles Onyx, Onyx claims their fight this time will be different than their previous one, for Onyx absorbed the hottest magma of Volkenon into himself. He proves his claim correct, for Oswald was unable to best Onyx. In desperation, Oswald again called upon his shadow powers despite using them extensively during the battle, and finally succumbed to the Belderiver's curse, becoming a Desecrator. Onyx ordered his forces to allow Oswald to continue wandering the dying Erion and said he would inform Gwendolyn of Oswald's fate when he found her. Oswald roamed Erion, uttering Gwendolyn's name one last time.

Relationships[]

Demon Lord Odin[]

Odin's and Onyx's relationship is respectful and mutual, but not exactly friendly in general. They both respect each other as Kings and little else. Much to Onyx's surprise Odin came to the Fire Kingdom looKing for Gwendolyn knowing well of how Odin treated her compared to Griselda. Odin was quickly able to deduce that the Three Wise Men wanted to use Onyx to attack Ragnanival using his daughter as bait. Odin calls it insanity and moves to leave, but when Onyx mentions the spell Odin casted on Gwendolyn Odin laughs then tells him the truth of the spell. After this they never speak again, though it's apparent that Odin wanted an alliance with Onyx at one point as he originally had Gwendolyn set to marry Onyx.

Princess Gwendolyn of the Ragnanival Kingdom[]

King Onyx sees her as his love interest and bears an intense rivalry with Oswald as a result, although Gwendolyn naturally dislikes King Onyx due to his attitude being similar to the men of her home. King Onyx does not mind her insults toward himself and still wants to have her to gain her love. To some degree while his feelings might be genuine, there is a greater desire to use her as a tool for his own whims. However, he knew she would never truly love him, and while she was in the enchanted sleep he refused to wake her up as she would flee immediately. He sees her as a symbol of utmost purity even though she is stained with the blood of others. In the false ending where she fights him he tells her that by taKing Oswald's hand she had lost any purity she had and despite killing her he remains at her side showing the possible truth to his feelings for her.

Oswald the Shadow Knight[]

King Onyx has a deep and intense hatred for Oswald mostly because he see's Oswald as being more stained in sin and death than him and believes Oswald is not worthy of Gwendolyn's hand. This hatred becomes greater when after fighting on his behalf due to an agreement Gwendolyn rushes to his aid quickly and takes him home. Angrily he even asks, "Why? Why him!?" unable to understand how or why Gwendolyn would want such a man stained in sin and death. In the false ending involving the rematch Onyx is unharmed by Oswald's attacks and he goads Oswald into turning into his berserk form so much he loses his physical form becoming a Desecrator.

Fairy Princess Mercedes of the Ringford Kingdom[]

Their only interaction with each other is during the events of Armageddon, where Mercedes returns to the Ringford Kingdom in search for any survivors. She then meets Onyx, who was burning the entire forest down with the Vulcans. They argued about the Prophecy, with Onyx claiming it was fake and that Yggdrasil was nonexistent, while Mercedes contradicts his points. They fought until they were both mortally wounded. Mercedes apologizes to her mother and speaks her real name, "Yggdrasil," which shocks Onyx. In his last minutes, he admits that he was wrong about Yggdrasil unable to kill him, but then mentions that there are no survivors in the Armageddon (although at the end of the game, this was proven false), until he crumbles into ashes.

Boss[]

He can be only fought as a boss in Oswald's book chapter the black sword where him and Oswald are competing over Gwendolyn's dominance for the acquirement of her love and also as a partner, the other being in the Armageddon depending what the character that players chooses to fight him although the canon character of choice for him is Mercedes as it is part of the true ending occurrence timeline.

Onyx is a boss that needs to be treated with care, due to his arsenal of attacks being capable of inflicting large amounts of damage along with inflicting Burn. He like Onyx is most of the time slow and predictable although a handful of his attacks are swift and difficult to overcome so the player needs to be on alert.

His attacks involve sprouting tentacles of fire from his chest which is easily avoided by blocKing or stepping away, he usually signals this by extending his hands. While performing the same pose he is capable of erupting fireballs into the ground which then rise into arcs of fire that finally cool down leaving rocky formations. It is imperative that one is not trapped in one of these arcs, since while they can be destroyed, they are tough to break and can fatal in conjunction with Onyx's most powerful attack, a full body tackle. Due to Oswald and Mercedes being unable to guard in the original game, this attack can kill them quick, even more so considering that Onyx also performs jumps if his target is airborne. To avoid this attack the player is recommended to jump behind Onyx before he attempts to run forward or simply run as far away as possible. Since this attack is symbolized by Onyx glowing on very bright colours and takes time to charge himself before running. Worthy of note however is that Onyx repeats this three times.

Other attacks that Onyx performs involve using propelling his fists as rockets, which swing for a long time and their trajectory is nearly unpredictable. However they can be attacked so they return to Onyx sto they stop harassing the player. Onyx can also perform a series of consecutive punches. Therefore it is recommended to keep a certain distance from Onyx or get behind him as often as possible. It is nonetheless recommended to use the Overload skill and Painkiller potion.

In Leifthrasir Onyx's difficulty has been at large reduced. While his attacks remain strong and can induce Burn with nearly any attack now, since all characters can Guard now, this reduced the threat of Onyx's most powerful attacks. The availability of skills and Oswald's Berserk Mode being governed by another gauge other than POW, also helps maKing the battle easier.

Trivia[]

  • Onyx is the only disaster with a generic boss theme, being "A Hard Fight and then Hope", the boss theme for all Epilogue bosses in the normal books. The other ones all have unique boss themes.
  • Onyx can be easily beaten either time by releasing a Slime to completely restrict his movement and actions.
  • Onyx is likely based on Surtr, King of the fire giants in Norse mythology. During Ragnarok, the end of the world, the flames that Surtr brings forth engulf the entire world. Surtr's name also translates as "black", of which the word Onyx is a synonym.
    • Symbolically speaKing however, Onyx and his Kingdom may represent the "Ring of Fire" in Der Ring des Nibelungen. In the opera, the Valkyrie Brynhildr (on whom Gwendolyn is based on), defied Odin and was put to sleep, confined in a castle where she was set to marry a man (much like in the game). The castle was surrounded by a "Ring of Fire" whom only the hero Siegfried (on whom Oswald is based on) could traverse on to wake up the sleeping Brynhildr, upon which the two fall in love with each other.
  • Onyx is voiced in Japanese by popular voice actor Tomokazu Seki. His role as Onyx opposite Ayako Kawasumi as Gwendolyn almost exactly mirrors the similar roles of their respective characters from the anime Fate/stay night. In Fate, Seki played Gilgamesh, an arrogant and powerful King obsessed with possessing the beautiful and proud warrior maiden Saber, played by Kawasumi. He also voiced Stahn Alieron from Tales of Destiny, who is also an aggressive fire user.
